IREM® Madison 2nd Quarter Newsletter Print

President's Report

IREM’s mission is to advance the profession of real estate management through collaboration, professional development and training.  So far in 2019 our IREM Madison has scheduled monthly events that address each one of these areas.

In March, Gebhardt Development hosted our chapter for a tour of their newest commercial development – The Gebhardt Building.  This event was the perfect way to collaborate with a local developer and engage our commercial management members and those interested in seeing one of the newest and coolest buildings in the downtown area. Over 40 attendees enjoyed lunch at the Tangent, the building’s first floor restaurant and bar tenant. We were then led on a tour to see office spaces for Miron Construction, Regus and Google. The event concluded with a tour of The Sylvee where we were given a behind the scenes look at the state-of-the-art music venue. Thanks to Brandon, Michael and each tenant for the incredible tour. This event received rave reviews!

A very important element of our Chapter is to provide professional development for our current and future members. One way we do this is by offering the ARM® RES201 course for real estate professionals to earn their ARM® credential – the most recognized certification in the residential real estate management industry.  In April, Tri-North Builders hosted our Chapter for the ARM® RES201 course taught by Bill Levy. Bill serves on our Board of Directors and has been teaching the ARM® course for many years. We as a chapter are grateful for Bill’s service teaching this course over the years and for helping so many people develop and grow in their careers.  Bill’s most recent class in April included 12 individuals and we look forward to recognizing these newest ARM®’s by name at an upcoming event.

If you are interested in obtaining your ARM® certification and missed the in-person course, IREM offers an online On-Demand ARM® Track Course. The On-Demand option is a flexible way to obtain your certification without having to spend a week out of the office. If interested, go to https://www.irem.org/resources/store/COURSE_OnDemand#ARMTRK.  Also, check with your employer for financial assistance as many companies offer funds for education and professional development.

On May 10, Doug McFee from The Energy House conducted a LED lighting training seminar. The world of LED lighting is advancing very rapidly with costs being reduced and technology advancing constantly. Doug provided an overview of how to evaluate LED lighting products, options for financing a LED retrofit project, and answers to the most common LED frequently asked questions. We as real estate managers are responsible for managing costs at our properties and the most impactful way to reduce expenses long term is to reduce energy costs with a LED retrofit. If you would like more information or guidance on your future LED retrofit project, contact Doug at [email protected] or www.energyhouseusa.com.

Our most popular event each year is the Betty Lou Cruises boat tour and this year’s event is being held on June 7th from 12:30pm-4:00pm. To accommodate the anticipated demand for this event, we reserved a bigger boat.  For any member that hasn’t previously attended, this event is the best time to connect with your industry peers to catch up on what’s happening at other properties and share best practices in addition to enjoying the beautiful scenery and great lunch. You can register for the Betty Lou Cruise and other future events on the IREM Madison Chapter website http://www.iremmadison82.org

If you have yet to make it to an event this year in person, please consider attending one in the future.  We value your membership and other members will value your participation.

See you soon,

Josh Lazare, CPM®, IREM Madison Chapter 82 President – [email protected]
